WHITE GOLD VS. PLATINUM

The key differences between white gold and platinum.

Engagement rings typically come in two metal types—gold (yellow, rose, and white), as well as platinum. Unless you have a particular look in mind, here’s some information to consider:

Durability

While both metals are relatively durable, platinum is denser, harder to scratch, and nearly impossible to break. We recommend platinum to ensure your diamond remains securely in its setting.

Pricing

While gold and platinum prices do fluctuate from month to month, platinum is slightly more expensive than gold. It’s a denser metal, so it has a higher working cost.

Maintenance

Both gold and platinum are easy to maintain, however gold will eventually need a rhodium re-finish. Over time, platinum will develop an attractive patina. Occasional polishing will keep both metals in top shape.

Hypo-Allergenic

Most platinum and white gold alloys are hypoallergenic and should not bother your skin. Our white gold is nickel-release-safe-- it shouldn't pose a problem, but contact our Perfection Stylists if you have questions.

Note: Hearts On Fire rings are stamped inside the band with "750" for 18K gold and "PT950" for platinum.
